Victor Onions (Pvt) Ltd was started in 1924 in the Harare city centre by Mr. Victor Onions himself. The core business of the company at that time was the refurbishment of automotive batteries.
The company continued largely in this form and moved to Graniteside around the 1960’s. The Harris family then purchased the business in 1984 and embarked on a redeveloping and expanding program which saw Victor Onions becoming the sole distributor of Lucas Batteries. Within a year the company started manufacturing crop spraying batteries which soon led to the manufacture of motorcycle batteries.
ln 1997 Victor Onions and Chloride Zimbabwe entered into a joint venture and technical exchange partnership, Victor Onions became the largest independent distributor of Exide Batteries in Zimbabwe and started manufacturing motorcycle batteries under the Exide brand. The Company continued to grow and opened a branch in 1996 and another one in Mutare in 1998.
From April 2000 the company started a major administrative, financial, and marketing restructuring exercise. This has seen major investments in personnel, state of the art equipment and infrastructure. The Bulawayo branch had its premises enlarged and revamped in 2001 and in 2002 the company acquired new corporate headquarters in Graniteside Harare.
The company’s present policy is “pro-activity in the marketplace and growth”. We believe this approach in business will see bigger growth in profits in the future and a company that will proudly take up its just position in the marketplace.
