3 ways to avoid distraction and conquer your to-do list

A seemingly never-ending to-do list can feel overwhelming. By learning to reduce distractions, you'll be able to tackle your to-do list more efficiently, providing you with more time to focus on the activities you truly enjoy.

1. Stay focused

Sure, your to-do list has several tasks on it, but you can only complete one at any given time. Focus on each task individually.

  • If you sit down to pay the bills, don't worry about that load of laundry in the dryer until the bill paying for the day is complete.
  • If your mind is scattered, distracted by your overwhelming list, you'll be less and less efficient when completing your current task.
  • Don't spread yourself too thin by multitasking.

2. Carve out dedicated time

Each day, identify a time that you can devote to conquering your household to-do list.

  • You might not have hours to dedicate to these tasks, but even a 15- or 30-minute block of time can help you check off a few items.
  • During that dedicated period, avoid any distractions. Shut down the computer or tablet, turn off the TV and stay on task during until time is up.
  • You will be amazed by how much you can accomplish in a distraction-free block of time, no matter how short it is.

3. Enlist help

Your family members might be the ones often serving as distractions. When they're distracting you from the task at hand, don't give up, ask them to pitch in and help instead.

  • Kids can help with simple cleaning tasks such as picking up toys, sweeping the floor or unloading the dishwasher.
  • Make chores fun by timing kids to see how quickly they can finish them and promising a reward once the task is completed.
  • You'll teach your children a sense of responsibility and show them what it takes to contribute to the household, all while gaining some much assistance.

Distractions and productivity do not mix, so minimising distractions is key when you have a lengthy to-do list leaving you stressed and stretched too thinly. When you check off the last task on your list, you'll feel accomplished and in control of your household responsibilities.
