Rainwater Harvesting - Swimming Pools

Rainwater Harvesting - Swimming Pools

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you!

We are in the middle of the rainy season. Some parts of the country have had extensive heavy, continuous downpours while other parts - especially in Harare - have had widespread but light showers. This has been deceptive as we feel that there is rain all about, but in reality, we are below average in many parts of Harare.  We need those heavy downpours to help us harvest the rainwater into our boreholes, swimming pools and water retaining items.

I want to talk about swimming pools. For many of us they are never used on a regular basis and cost a fair amount to maintain. In fact, they are blue elephants! I want to sow a seed…why not change the usage of that 30,000 - 100,000lt of wasted chlorinated asset into a rain water storage tank. The benefit is that the structure is already in place, it therefore won’t cost you a cent except a mind change. A reset. The new NORMAL. All it needs for its conversion is a black plastic tubing from your gutters into your pool. Don’t let that free rain water go to waste. It is criminal if you do!

My pool, for the last 4 years have been a pond with gold fish, interesting water plants and even barbel. The frogs make a tasty treat for the barbel and attract a wide variety of birdlife too. Its storage of water really keeps my garden alive during the suicide months of October and November as well as providing me with copious water plants which are utilised as a wet mulch.

Just sowing a seed….

Henning
